Starting Your New Career in Real Estate: The Good and The Bad

Back Posted On: 20 Dec, 2017

Are you thinking of starting a new career as a real estate agent?

Does the image of a flexible schedule and bottomless earning potential really grab your attention?

There are many questions that come to mind when shifting careers, and in the world of real estate, we here at Greatways Realty Inc. would like to offer you some answers to some of those questions and give you both sides of the story. Sure we have all heard the stories of agents who don’t make anything in real estate all the while we also here about the crazy agents out there pulling seven figures in each year, but what is it really like?

Your first few months in Real Estate

The Good:

For most states in the US, completing the training, testing and filing your license is a very short process. In only a few weeks or months you can be on your way to brokeraging someones dream home.

The Bad:

Initially there is a great deal of investment of money and time with no immediate reconciliation. As well, you are given no guarantee that you will even pass the licensure exams or that you will be successful as an agent, and no there are no refunds for the class, examination or your time.

You are the Boss

The Good:

As a real estate agent you are your own boss, in other words you are an independent contractor and no one has more influence on your success then you. If you stay focused and maintain impeccable work ethic you can most definitely be a rockstar seven figure agent.

The Bad:

If your not the most focused or your work ethic is less than exciting then you may have a hard time working as your own boss. You are responsible for so many moving parts that all need your attention and if you can’t give it your all you may find yourself struggling.

Flexibility!

The Good:

As an agent, your time is your own, you get to choose your hours and you get to enjoy the fact that if you have to make time for personal things in your life you very well can. Who doesn’t love the chance to sleep in once in awhile when they had a long night?

The Bad:

On the flip side, all that free time is quickly allocated to client time.  Whether you are showing a home, listing a home, searching for a home or just getting to know your client, a real estate agent job can be sporadic with time allocations spread out all over the day. 9am Call Susan, 10:15 show Johns house, 12:30 Listing appointment with the McDaniels. I think you get the point.

Limitless Earning Potential

The Good:

As mentioned before, many of us have heard the stories of the Agents out there making seven figures yearly selling real estate, and the possibility is available to everyone who can make it through the trenches. You really can become wealthy selling real estate.

The Bad:

Sometimes you may go months without closing any deals, you are entirely responsible to prepare for these dry times and if your just starting out, you most likely will be writing many checks before you ever receive one.

Think about it?

Real Estate is a wonderful career yes, for some, not for all though so make sure this is what you want. I can say for myself I wouldn’t even think about doing something else.
